Iago asked: The reason I ask is that I went to a bookshop in town and I found the bible – right there between Ancient Egypt and Rome – in the history section. Wow, I was really amazed, what makes people think stories of talking snakes actually happened and should be thought of as history? To answer my own question I would put it somewhere between Paranormal and Fiction.

I see your point, but if you take away all of the make believe magicy stuff [read Jefferson's Bible] you’re left with an interesting collection of political viewpoints from that part of the world at that time in history.

Lets just put it in theology section.

It belongs in the fantasy section, with all the other 3d rate novels there…

IMHO it belongs in both.
if you are actually meaning where in the bookshop and library would you place the bible…. that’s a little different then the question you actually asked. in the bookshop it should be with religious works and the same in the library.

Yes, the history section is not the place to put the bible. It should be placed either in ‘fiction’, or in ‘mythology’.

The Bible should be with the best sellers of all time under fiction ! Not even Harry Potter comes close !

The Bible is a historical document, and relates both the history of the Israelites, and the early Christians and their Founder, Jesus Christ. Most of what it relates is substantiated by other non-Jewish, or non-Christian sources.
On the other hand, the Bible is not to be treated as history in the sense of a chronological account of the world from Day 1. To do that is to expect too much.
However, you don’t expect too much from the Bible. You expect nothing, and so that is probably what you will get.

As you probably know the Bible consists of two sections. The Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old was from the Jewish texts that have been handed down over the millennia. The New Testament is historic documentation of the life of Jesus. It is made up of scripts from various sources and compiled into a single book. Some were written by the followers of Jesus and are therefore classed as eyewitness testament. There are many other people in history that we only know about because of written references. The New Testament from a historical point of view is no different to the others.

The Bible, fortunately in Roman Catholic Puerto Rico under the supervision of Protestant United States is in the Religion section in Borders here in Mayaguez Mall. In all American stores run by Puerto Ricans the Bible is highly respected in both languages. Even Walmart has a section for Bibles only with other books of inspiration. The Bible is found easily here in Walgreens, Amals.

I say it belongs in the garbage. Firstly, morally it does not help anybody and historically it is also not of much use since there are so many contradictions and mistakes in it.
If I was forced to put it somewhere in a library I would put it on the rack for mythology where all other old gods have died peaceful deaths and their supporters have stopped irritating the rest of the world.
