How would you go about starting a bookshop?

*Do*You*Believe* asked:

I’ve never done any kind of my own business before, but it’s just a dream I have… any tips? I know private bookshops tend to fail and go out of business quite frequently, especially with places like Borders and BN around, but I’d love to try to do this… thanks in advance!

One thing you might do is try starting with an online store to test the waters. The initial investment will be smaller, and you’ll have less to lose.

If you want to open a brick and mortar store, you should offer more than just books. For example if you serve coffee, or provide internet access, and make the store a comfortable place to browse and hang out, you’re more likely to survive than if you’re just depending on book sales in a country where people really don’t read very much.

Smaller bookstores can also compete with the big stores like Borders by creating a niche for themselves, specializing in a certain type of book, such as Christian books, political books, children’s books, local interest books, or some other specialty.

    Hope those ideas help.

See what competition offers and offer something that they don’t. Don’t just stick with books. Call your local sheriffs office and they can direct you in who to talk to for license requirements. Usually just a retail licese. That usually starts out at $50 or so. You will need a building of course and suppliers. Start researching now!!! Start figuring cost for books and such. See what others are charging. Make sure you can mark up prices in order to make enough profit (100% is good). Just start really digging. You can catch me on and I will help you. Just tell me you are the bookstore lady:>).

I can appreciate you wanting to be a bookseller. I managed a bookstore in the mid-90s, so I think I can speak to this pretty well. Borders and BN are the least of your concern. 7 out of 10 new books sold in America today are sold by Amazon.com at a deep discount, and with free shipping on orders over $25.

If you want to succeed, in the book business today you need a few things:

    1. A “niche” – a very narrow specialzed focus. For example “Mom 2 Be” Bookstore. Where all the books are about pregnancy, parenting, how children affect a marriage, etc. And include some books for infants and toddlers.

    2. A GREAT Location: A brick and mortor store by itself only works if it is located in a place with high foot traffic and relatively easy parking in the area – or a particular location that is a natural for the store, in this case right near a hospital with a large birthing center, or near an elementary school.

It helps if you can take the store online. And online stores that reviews can develop quite a following.

    3) A whole lot of financing. In the neighborhood of $350K.

Often it can be more cost effective to buy a “troubled” store and rework it a bit.

To provide you with all the details of opening a business could take 20 pages. Do you want to know where to open? How to finance it? Where to find inventory? Licenses, permits? Each one of these is a specific question. I suggest that you start out with a business plan. It does not have to be fancy at this point but this will help you break this undertaking into smaller tasks. Then you will be able to discover the solutions to specific questions.
