A billiard table shop which became a bookshop?

chauncy asked:

Does any reader remember the following story?

About 30 years ago a shop in Melbourne, Australia which sold billiard tables got in trouble for opening illegally at weekends. They got around the law by becoming a bookshop instead. Their books were expensive – $1,100 each – but with each book purchased you got a free billiard table.

That’s all I can remember now! I would love to get further information about this story, or a link to anything about it on the Internet, if there is one. Thanks.
